Google announced this feature at the Google's I/O conference, and highlighted that it will make writing more quicker so you need less time to complete certain email tasks.
Although, as at the time of writing this, the feature is still on experimental mode. It's in pre-release phase, and as with any feature in this stage, you can test it and share your feedback with Google.
HOW TO ACCESS IT
To turn the feature on, first make sure you're using the new Gmail, and then follow the series of steps mentioned in the Gmail Help support page (link below). You need to hit the Tab key to accept a suggestion. Also, Smart Compose is currently only available in English.

You can always opt out of the feature by simply going to back to settings > general > uncheck experimental access box.
