This might be one of the reasons most Nigerian targeted blogs and websites are loosing traffic recently. The number of subscribers keeps reducing coupled with the recent incremental data plan prices. Some people find it hard to subscribe to data plans.
Now according to the report from Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria’s $70 billion telecommunications industry ended year 2017 with 145 million active subscribers, after loosing 10 million customers within the period.
The stats which was revealed by NCC yesterday shows that teledensity crashed, loosing 7%.
HOW THE TOP NETWORK PROVIDERS FAIRED
From the statistics, MTN is still the most popular in the market and finished the year with 36.2% market share and 51.4million subscribers.
The second largest network in the country is the indigenous Globacom with 37 million subscribers and 26.4% market share.
Airtel came third with 25. 3% of the market with 35.9 million subscribers.
While the embattled 9mobile had to settle with 12.03% market share with 17 million subscribers.
In the telecom industry, the year started with 155 million subscriptions and 110 per cent teledensity, but within the 12 months period, so many subscribers dropped their telephone lines because of one reason or the other.
CAUSES OF DECLINE IN TELECOM SUBSCRIBER BASE
If you ask me, I will say that massive SIM deactivation process of unregistered SIM cards also contributed to this.
Another likely cause for this unfortunate situation is the emergence of instant social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Telegram, Skype, Facebook Messenger, among others which offers free and affordable voice and video call services.

ReplyDeleteI agree with that line, i noticed it since December last year, but just keep my calm hoping things get will better.
The issue of data is one thing we Nigerians dont joke with when it comes to using smart devices alongside with other gadgets.
Its just too unfair that the call rate we all know is very expensive, making call to international destination is a 'No go area, so alot of us took good advantage of the previous cheap data as a means of making those international calls, hence it was very cheap compared to making call with the normal airtime, apart from that the days of cheap data really made the running of day to day activities online possible, one can carry out transaction at any point in time.
That which is currently failing. reason because a limitation has been placed on it.
The current reduction in data is not Just a problem but they added increment to their data fee.
What should they expect before?
Booming business as usual?
The tough economy we have as of today is the biggest threat right now to bloggers, online business and telcos industry.
If the government on seat today can do something that will revived things at this point, there will be sure progress..
