Opera 50.0 is the latest version of the web browser now released and available for Windows, Mac and Linux devices.
Among the newly added features on Opera 50 is the anti-Bitcoin mining tool which is meant to eliminate the secret Cryptocurrency Mining activities on users devices without their consent. Also among the features is the support for both Chromecast and Oculus Rift VR headsets, better protection for browsing sessions after crashes, and a major upgrade to its VPN service.
WHAT IS BITCOIN MINING?
Bitcoin mining is the act of secretly adding hidden scripts on web pages that makes use of unsuspecting users PCs to mine for Bitcoins on behalf of others. This process usually results to sudden spikes in CPU and temperature, including draining of device battery.
This Bitcoin Mining script can continue running in background even after the user exits the website. Stats has it that over 500 million people have been affected globally.
This Cryptocurrency mining process is called “cryptojacking,” and it could make your device performance very low and sluggish.
However, the good news now is that there is a fix for it with this latest update. The Opera 50 browser comes with built-in protections against cryptojacking. Opera 50 uses the No Coin list, which is updated regularly as new mining scripts emerge.
According to opera in a statement;
“We are fans of cryptocurrencies but we simply don’t accept that websites are using people’s computers to mine coins without their knowledge or consent. With the new Opera 50, we want to kick off 2018 by providing people a simple way to regain control of their computers.”
