MTN cries out that WhatsApp, Viber, others adversely affecting their business in Nigeria and urges the Federal Government of Nigeria to take action.
Over the past two months, we have heard serial bad news and Impending doom in the telecom industry which if implemented, will surely affect the common man. First, the CBN Governor, proposed that tax should be placed on phone calls in Nigeria and recently, NCC directed all telcos in Nigeria to review and increase the prices of data plans in the country and now, MTN is suggesting WhatsApp to be banned. What is all this?
The MTN boss who also appealed to the senate yesterday implement the data price floor set by NCC is suggesting that the federal government should take action against WhatsApp because its affecting their services. In order words, ban whatsapp in Nigeria.

According to a report from Dail Post, The Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of MTN Nigeria, Mr. Ferdinand Moolman, disclosed that the activities of ‘over-the-top’ companies like WhatsApp, Viber have adverse effects on its business and affects the sustainability of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
… the MTN boss pointed out that these companies were eroding gains of Nigeria’s telecom companies and asked Nigeria to take action like the United Arab Emirates did.
Recall that in the United Arab Emirates, both WhatsApp and SnapChat calls were banned seriously that it might even get you to jail if you dare try it.

So should we emulate UAE? Why can't we emulate the good parts of UAE that made them what they are today? Why can't we emulate their infrastructural and human development?
